Dear Daniel, I feel I must respond to your posting because I had a few *real NATIVE ENGLISH* speakers in this class and their feedback was this was the first time EVER in an English class where they had been challenged and learned !!! Honestly !! Children who speak English at home or wherever.. do not necessarily (or most likely don't ) read at the same level. So we need to teach these pupils just like any other pupils in order to have them reach a higher level of English.. ( both in reading and writing). The use of Authentic literature is a wonderful way and we , the teachers need to show them how to relate to them. For example , I taught the book NIGHT and one of my students who had just arrived from 6 years in an American school in Zimbabwe told me she had read it there. However after having taught it to her my way ( using HOTS etc..) she told me she had learned much more this way and really understood it. I think the best way to persuade your pupils is to be convinced yourself that they still need to learn English and to love teaching the program. I can send you feedback ( to pass on to your students if you like) .. from my Native speakers.. All the best... Aviva AND PS.. From my years of experience even a child who completed the total bagrut in 10th grade didn't get a high grade and from then on. most likely ( in most cases , not all !!) didn't look at a written English text again. AND tell me why in the USA ( my birth place ) English (language and literature ) is the ONLY required course in the 12th grade ( for Native speakers !!) "It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts?it is to teach them to think.? Robert M.
