New trends in the UNICEF Project.

We have just had two celebrations. The first involved two schools, an Arab junior high in Taibeh and its partner a junior high in Petach Tikva. Seventy students and their principals gathered at the latter school. Some students had already met before. All had prepared UNICEF portfolios and were handed out their Diplomas. During the welcome ceremony the Jewish students sang in Arabic the Arabs in English. In a large room decorated with greetings, the students sat at "mixed" tables where each group decorated a poster bearing one of the letters UNICEF ISRAEL. which were late displayed. It was hard to break up the gathering when it was time to go. Anyone who didn't know, would have thought these Arab and Jewish students had been friends for years. The Taibeh students surprised us by wearing t-shirts with their school name and UNICEF printed on them. This is an ongoing project and the students will meet next year to discuss their portfolios and plan further activities. The co-existence project was directed by Elana Cheshin.

The second celebration took place at Kaye College in Beersheva. Six student teachers and representatives of their classes received their Diplomas in a classroom decorated with student's posters and a display of their portfolios. The six student teachers who taught at four Arab and two Jewish schools in the area had planned all activities together. They also made power point presentations about their academic work to an audience of student teachers, teacher trainers, the principal of Rahat High School and schools students. Carla Nochomovitz directed the project which will continue next year, probably in a different format.

I was very impressed by the celebrations and the work done by all the participants.

We invite English classes to join the project. For more information, please contact me during the holidays at lucas@xxxxxxxxxxxx
