1875 =96 Born: Edgar Rice Burroughs, novelist who created Tarzan,

1904 - Helen Keller graduates with honors from Radcliffe College
1923 - An earthquake levels the Japanese cities of Tokyo and

1938 - Mussolini (Italy) canceled civil rights of Italian Jews and

1939 - World War II: Nazi Germany attacks Poland, beginning the war.

2004 - Chechen terrorists took about 1,200 schoolchildren and others
hostage in Beslan, Russia. Commandos stormed the school on Sept. 3.
In the Harry Potter books September 1, the day on which the Hogwarts
Express departs from Platform 9=BE, always falls on a Sunday; this
means that the first day of lessons is always a Monday.
I gave our staff this list on the first staff meeting but you could use
it in class as well.
