In response to Hannah's request: I had shared an idea with schools in one
of the networks. In our school, we sent a letter to the parents announcing
a reading competition close to two months ago. It was opened to students of
all levels, 7th through 10th grade. Each class received a link for a Google
form which they had to complete, ideally daily, with their name, the title
of the book they were reading, how many pages they had read that day
(week), and three new words they had learned. Since it's per grade, every
student in the grade counts and every day of reading adds up. Since it was
created for students in Ulpanot and Yeshivot, we called it "English Daf
Yomi" aka Read-A-Thon. Parents were asked to also sign off on the reports,
confirming their children had read, primarily to encourage parental
involvement to follow up that students were reading at home.
Each grades' responses to the form appear on separate Excel documents. At
the end of the competition in a week, we'll divide the number of pages read
in each grade by the number of students so that a grade with three homeroom
classes doesn't beat a class with only two. At the entrance to the main
building, we have visual graphs showing the progress of each class and
we've posted the numbers of pages each class has read on Facebook. The
winning class will get a prize during Adar Bet. Students were told that
the book(s) they read can be used for their next book task. It's been a
positive way of getting students reading more.
