Police opened 54 percent more criminal investigations of violence against teachers in the 2002-3 school year than in the preceding year, according to figures released by the police youth division. A Geocartographia poll conducted for the Secondary Schools Teachers Association showed that over the past two years, 7 percent of all high school teachers had reported instances of physical violence against them by students, and that 8 percent had experienced physical violence by parents. The figures were made public Monday at a Knesset Education Committee discussion on violence in schools. All participants in the discussion agreed with Teachers Union Deputy Secretary-General Ofra Dunsky, who said the statistics were merely the "tip of the tip of the iceberg."
