As part of the English program for the Central Galilee, two more local Spelling
Bee competitions for the elementary schools have taken place since Nazareth
Elite - one in Emek Yizreel and one in Migdal Haemek.

Both events were very successful.

There were halls full of excited pupils supporting their school representatives
with banners, placards and slogans all in English , impressive performances in
spelling with the organizers having to resort to "tie breakers" to reach
clear winners, home-grown local entertainment in English between rounds,
flowers and prizes and certificates and speeches of support by the head of the
local educational departments and mayors. Yes, something very positive is
taking place.

Truth be told, the actual events themselves, though exciting and impressive,
are only the visible climax of a long and important process through which
teachers (who worked really hard) become more aware and perhaps more
proficient, and pupils gain skills they might previously not have gained.

Many people are responsible for the momentum being generated in the area but
Hilary Lavi and Sarit Bar, Stephanie Fuchs and Liat Pinto , Mickey Landau and
Ettie Mizrachi , Julie Mensky and Ofra Rosenstein need special mention.

The reports together with pictures have been put up on the ETNI site
http://www.etni.org.il/spelling.htm

You can also reach them from the main ETNI page. Click on Lesson Plans and
then scroll down to Spelling. (Thank you David for creating this spot on the
site).
