Neighborhood classes mooted for English-speakers Haaretz - September 6, 2007One week into the new school year, there is still no comprehensive solution to provide English-language instruction at an appropriate level to children in the school system whose native tongue is English. But after a high-level Education Ministry meeting this week, officials announced that they will begin to actively address the issue.
For now, directives are being issued to the country's English teachers, according to which the native English-speakers in their classes may read, write or do independent study during the regular English classes.
The ministry will begin by "mapping out the country" according to the concentration of English speakers, after which it will "begin formulating solutions," a spokesman said.
One option is to create Ministry-sponsored English classes for native speakers by neighborhood or area. The spokesman was unable to provide additional information about the plan, which he said was still in the early stages, but he noted that the mapping process could take several weeks.
