I totally agree with Dan. The Irgun is there to protect your rights. Whether
they do a good job of it or not depends largely on the following of its
members and the presentation of our complaints to them. There are many
situations that each of us privately or collectively need an organization
that will support and stand up to our employees for our rights.
Unfortunately, most teachers are too complacent and don't stand up for their
rights. Possibly, this might be one of the factors that has brought about
the low esteem of our profession in the public's eye. It is no wonder that
the teaching profession is one of the least sought for white collar job in
Israel today. The increasing demands without additional pay, the degradation
by parents and pupils, and the lack of tools in which to deal with classroom
management with the increase of youth violence both inside and outside of
the school has led us into a quagmire that only a strong turnabout will jolt
our society into reevaluating what a mess we are in. The union is one of the
ways in which we can bring about such a change if used properly.
Barry
