I'm a retired teacher teaching English on a voluntary basis to pupils who have
been referred to our centre (in Modi'in) by the welfare services of the city.
My problem is that I keep getting secondary school pupils who are barely at the
3 point level. They usually have a few months to be ready for end of year exams
and I teach them, at best, 1 hour a week.
This year I have a pupil in yod aleph who will be doing module A this year. As
far as I could see during our first lesson, he is at beginner level in all
aspects: vocabulary, grammar, reading, comprehension etc.
I am very frustrated because I don't see how I can make any impact and help him
at this stage of his schooling.
Perhaps somebody out there can help. Any easy-to-apply ideas would be
appreciated. (I have spent the last three years working hard to help these kids
but they don't or can't, help themselves so the time I've spent feels wasted).
