Thank you, David, for directing our thoughts about our profession to the positive aspects -- at least for a few moments! (I hope this little contribution isn't coming too late.) I indulged in a bit of free association and have decided to describe a fairly recent experience when I met a former student in a shopping mall about a decade after she was in my class. We had a good time reminiscing, and before we parted she told me --this was unsolicited -- the 2 most important things (global, not specifically about English) she learned in my class that she didn't appreciate at the time, but they helped her get through BIU with distinction: 1. Think before you speak / write -- both about the contents of your thoughts and the mode of expression. (Note: this was pre-HOTS!) 2. Don't submit work that you are (or should be!) ashamed to write your signature on. I felt gratified because this serves as proof that our pleas, warnings, (threats?!) etc. -- which sometimes seem to go unheeded -- can bear fruit that we may never taste, at least not directly.
