Subject: eat / tea ?

Hello..

Sometimes the idea of a certain sentence in a grammar exercise is not
very clear. For example, in the sentence below, I can't seem to get
the past times of the events in the sentence. Can you please help me?

A; "I was in your hometown last month. It looked like a nice town. I
_______________ (be , never) there before.

B: "What __________________ (do, you) in that part of the country?"

A; "My wife and I _______________ (drive) to Washington to visit her folks."

Also, I appreciate it if you tell me how words such as  "read/dear,
teach/cheat, meat/team" are called.

Thank you very much.
