Subject: clarification on my former post
Dear Etniers:
Bari wrote to me to clarify a point which I had misunderstood. I'm
copying her clarification and my response.

Hi Sharon,
I saw your post on ETNI and I wanted to relate to one point that you
misunderstood. For the log, it's not a test at the end of every year. The
number of summative assessments has been reduced -- you only give a summative
assessment on three of the six texts and of course they can be given as soon
as you finish the texts. The other three will have a graded component but no
summative assessment.
Dear Bari:
Thank you for the clarification.
Despite the fact that giving only three summative assessments means
less work, it really doesn't make sense pedagogically. I'm sure you
realize that the other graded element, let's say the post reading,
does not really give an indication as to whether the student read and
understood the story. The post reading assignments are often rather
"tangential", if you know what I mean. It would make more sense to
eliminate 3 post readings... though that would be a pity because the
post readings boost the grades of the weak students.
Furthermore, I'm sure you realize that the average Israeli student
does not pay much attention to anything not being taught for an exam.
Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have a summative assessment on
each piece but to make it shorter.. as I suggested?
BTW - In addition to what I wrote to Bari, I've just thought of
something else. If we don't have to give a summative assessment on
every piece, doesn't that mean that theoretically, students doing a
log can get away with not being tested on the play/novel!
