Subject: Teachers React to Release of Data

Hi All,

A follow up to the article Steve Hellman posted. These comments by NY
City teachers are insightful. The whole scheme of things, as described
in the article he posted and continued here, is awful and scary. As
Israel seems to walk in America's footsteps, for better and for worse,
we should keep our antennas up.

Teachers throughout the city have been objecting to the public release
on Friday of individual teacher performance rankings. They called in
to WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show,” they sent comments to SchoolBook
and they wrote sometimes lengthy explanations on the forms that
SchoolBook made available for teachers to respond to their individual
reports.

Their comments spoke to the anguish they experienced in seeing the
published reports, or their anger about their publication. Many
pointed out what they saw as flaws in the methodology.
