* This week T.E.A.M.'s program is a special one. We are honored to
present: *
*Kenubish Guado *
*"From Ethiopia to Israel: Home Life, Journey, and Aliyah Adjustment" *
* Kenubish Guado has lived in two very different countries. With a
warm personality and an upbeat attitude, Kenubish will enlighten us on her
Ethiopian upbringing and the challenges of balancing her native culture in
her approach to the life-style and people in Israel. She will share her
childhood memories of life in Ethiopia, growing up Jewish with a single
mother. Her Aliyah to Israel entailed an initial and an ongoing culture
shock and behavioral adjustment. At age 17 Kenubish went to the U.S. for 2
weeks to serve as a young ambassador for ADL. This position entailed
speaking to various groups of young people in LA. Kenubish will tell us
about her cultural adjustment to the U.S. and the reaction she received.*
* The Swiss Havayot Community Center is taking part in the special
project called "The Story of a Journey" ("ס×פ×ר ×¢× ××ר×").
T.E.A.M. is
one of the Havayot groups participating in this project and we invite you
to join us this Monday. This project marks the the Sigd Holiday,
celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish Community. *
* Sigd is an Amharic word meaning "prostration" or "worship" and is the
commonly used name for a holiday celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish
community on the 29th of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan. This date is
exactly 50 days after Yom Kippur, usually falling out in late October or
November, and according to the Ethiopian Jewish tradition, is also the date
that G-d first revealed himself to Moses. *
