Subject: Program in English Editing and Editorial Scholarship


This program provides training and professional enrichment for people
interested in or already working as editors of written communications
in the English language. The program imparts skills needed for the
preparation of publication-quality texts for use in both printed and
electronic media.

Course Duration and Academic Credit: The program is one academic year
(two semesters) in length. Classes will take place on Tuesdays from
08:30 to 15:30 and will confer eight (8) annual credit hours. The
program opens in October 2010.

Course Participants: Individuals interested in developing and refining
their editorial and text analysis skills for professional application
and personal enrichment.

Program Objectives: Emphasis is placed on enhancing language skills
(grammar, spelling, punctuation, composition and style), achieving
competency in line editing, copy editing, proofreading and formatting
and the attainment of the analytical skills needed  to assess and
develop texts (editorial scholarship).

Staff: The program is directed by Dr. Yosef (Yossi) Gotlieb, a writer,
educator and editor. The instructors include experienced editors and
English language specialists.

Format: The program entails classroom instruction and hands-on
workshops In-class exercises, readings and homework are an integral
part of the program. Other elements include
* A computer preparatory program,
* Visiting lectures by prominent editorial and publication professionals,
* An applied project conducted during the second semester.

Specialization: Students are exposed to both subject (e.g., academic,
scientific) concentrations and functional (e.g., line editing, =
copyediting) specializations throughout the program.

Admission Requirements: (1) An entrance exam assessing English
language proficiency, (2) a personal interview, (3) an undergraduate
degree, and (4) word processing and other basic computer skills.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in editing,
writing, translation or related fields.

Successful completion of the program will lead to a certificate from
the David Yellin Academic College.

Tuition: 7,100 NIS.
