Subject: dovrei anglit

I sincerely hope that teachers will not be out of a job because these Native
Speaker classes have been cancelled. The Minhal Hityashvuti (The Rural
Sector) is looking for good teachers for the coming year so please if you
feel you want to TEACH, write to me (my email: tsuravi@xxxxxxxxxxx). I am
sure that my colleagues will also be thrilled to place you in schools that
need good teachers.
In the past we had Dovrei classes but in the past few years these kids
blended beautifully within the regular class. These kids can actually
contribute to the lessons (not at the cost of losing out), they have their
library books and were expected to hand in projects and reading portfolios
at their level.

I am at present a teacher of Dovrei Anglit in the Sharon area. Apparently a parent of one of the pupils in the area complained in an anonymous letter about the fact that the classes, which were conducted during school hours, were subsidized by the parents and not given through school hours (and thus paid for by the school). Consequently a lawsuit followed: the decision was that this was an instance of grey education ("talan") and the problem was that it was an extra class paid for by parents that was NOT open to all students, and therefore illegal. Therefore, as of next year all dovrei anglit classes that are paid for by parents (i.e. not by school hours) will be cancelled and the Native speakers will study in the regular English class. What is most disturbing is the fact that teachers and pupils have not been notified about this court order and only vague reports have leaked out. Teachers will be out of jobs as of September 1st and are not aware of this fact. Other teachers will have heterogeneous, large classes that might include weak learners as well as native speakers. And, finally the native speakers will be bored and only those families who have the financial means to do so will be able to send their children to private lessons after school hours. I do not wish to say which school was responsible for fear of repercussions.
