Subject: CD and tapes clarification

Some clarifications:

First, unless we hear otherwise, CD disks are the only media that will be
sent this winter. I suggest we inform our students. I'd like to think that
at last minute we'll be offered an option of tapes as well, but I highly
doubt it. The numbers are mind-boggling. Mr. HaLevi told me that the
ministry needs to supply over 40,000 of the given media. (I don't know if
the numbers he gave me were for summer or winter - but it's a lot.

Much as we'd like to help them, it is their responsibility and that of their
parents. I think that one can find cheap CD players (apparently, it doesn't
have to be a diskman) - and there are students who have CD players at home
that they can bring.

Someone wrote to me that they thinking of having kids use a CD drive of a
computer. That is NOT an option - there are too many other resources that
kids can access on a computer.

Secondly, some people writing to the list thought that the Ministry should
handling this issue and not a volunteer teacher (though people have
expressed appreciation of my efforts). The Ministry - i.e. - Judy Steiner -
IS involved. There is a committee working on the issue and Judy is on the
committee. The reason Mr. HaLevi called me is because I asked him if I (and
perhaps other teachers who are interested) could use MP3 players with my own
students this winter as a trial run for using MP3s. I figured that on the
day of the exam, 20 minutes before the exam, I could open the envelope, and
change the CD files to MP3 files and then load them on to my students' MP3
players. I have about 5 students doing F with HaKraat Sheilon this winter,
so the numbers aren't so daunting. If course, I would do a few trial runs
this semester.

Mr. HaLevi was not against the idea, but wasn't sure if I should take upon
myself such responsibility just to save a few students from bringing (or
even buying) CD players - and I think he has a good point. As I wrote
before, I was pleased to see that the people involved are thinking of all
the various problems involved. Perhaps I was able to give him so more
input - as a teacher in the field.
