**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** I am moved to protest the sentiment expressed by Nina: "If any teacher objects to proctoring once or twice (in lieu of the hours he doesn't have to teach) then it is no wonder that the public thinks that teachers are lazy and don't want to do anything outside of their working hours!" I find this unnecessarily harsh and closer to a personal attack than a reasonable argument. Differing points of view add spice and interest to discussions on this list and in our daily lives. Professionals in any field will hold contrasting tenets. I expect English teachers to debate the value of explicit grammar teaching, alternative assessment, use of L1, and numerous other classroom issues. I also expect the phonics fanatic and the whole language freak to be able to coexist. Many issues we ponder do not yet have any one perfectly proven right answer (I believe it was Voltaire who pointed out "Doubt is not a pleasant condition but certainty is absurd"). More importantly, tolerance for differing viewpoints and following fair rules of debate are values which I believe we, as teachers, should strive towards in our own lives, and not merely express as platitudes during certain situations.
