31th International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants - DIOXIN 2011, 21-25 August, Brussels, Belgium More information: www.dioxin2011.org/<http://www.dioxin2011.org/> Deadline abstract submission: 01 May 2011 Dear colleagues, At Dioxin 2011 we will get the opportunity to update the state of the art on the science of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as dioxins, PCB's and many more emerging organohalogen compounds (e.g. brominated and fluorinated chemicals) which persist in the environment and pose health risks to wildlife and man. There will be a joint session with the European Society for Toxicology in Vitro (ESTIV) on "Alternative tests to evaluate hazards and potency of POPs". We invite you to submit an abstract for this session and contribute to new knowledge of these chemicals as obtained with alternative tests. This may include mechanistic information and improved prediction of potential human toxicity. Former efforts across the toxicological community to study exposure and effects of POPs mainly relied on animal studies. But in view of high need for testing of unknown or new chemicals, environmental mixtures, and taking into account the EU-animal legislation in favour of 3R (refinement, reduction, replacement), a paradigm shift in toxicity testing requiring new approaches does evolve. In silico methods, biochemical and cell-based assays, as well as methods using lower organisms (e.g. zebrafish, fly,..) are investigated as alternative methods. Innovative approaches (-omics), identification of toxicity pathways and mechanism-based profiling of POPs can offer new insights into hazards of these chemicals, with relevance for human health risk assessment.
