Senior Scientist Genetic Toxicology
AstraZeneca

Within the overall AstraZeneca strategy, cutting-edge innovation is at the 
heart of what we do, and our R&D strategy has been carefully constructed to 
deliver on our promise to our patients, customers, and shareholders.

Description of the department and role
Discovery Safety is new department within Drug Safety and Metabolism and 
applies cutting edge molecular, cellular and in vivo techniques to assist in 
the discovery of new and effective medicines.

The Discovery Safety group provides broad project support starting with target 
identification up to candidate nomination for start of dose range finder 
toxicology conducted by our regulatory safety department. The Discovery Safety 
group includes a dedicated team of scientists who work closely with the local 
disease areas, in silico experts for safety and ADME, genetic toxicology 
expertise and secondary pharmacology combined with early assay development.

We’ll look to you to bring in new techniques and ideas in early clinical phases 
by identifying molecules with the “Right Safety” profile. The role will be 
mainly laboratory based & conduct genetic toxicology studies and understand the 
practices, principles and concepts associated with reviewing, planning, 
conducting, validating, reporting a variety of studies.

The role will also be to keep abreast of new science and techniques and assess 
their potential use in genetic toxicology.

The role may where necessary, understand and apply Home Office Regulations and 
ensure the welfare and environment of laboratory animals is maintained 
consistent with scientific objectives.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities
You will:

• Have an understanding of how genetic toxicology interacts with others within 
the discovery safety and how they support the objectives of the business.

• Maintain a knowledge internally and externally of new trends in study design, 
experimental techniques and specialised equipment.

• Contribute to the objectives of the department through active participation 
in department and cross functional project teams.

• Have expertise in planning and organising daily work, and perhaps that of 
team members. The role holder will evaluate the progress of own work, and 
perhaps those of other team members, using judgement to recognise anomalous 
performance or results.

• Understand need for on-going change and will assist others in handling 
associated uncertainty.

Minimum Requirements - Education and Experience

Essential

• Will possess at least a biological sciences or chemistry BSc or higher degree 
and preferably have relevant laboratory experience of conducting safety 
assessment or other laboratory studies.


Desirable

• Knowledge of Ames, in vitro and in vivo Micronucleus tests would be helpful, 
though training can be given.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Cell culture experience and sterile technique and microscopy particularly 
fluorescent would
be an advantage.
