Sitting outside this evening in the almost dark, my wife and I both heard a Whip poor will calling close to the house. About five minutes later, he called from a different position and further away. The last whip poor will that I know of on my patch was a sighting back in the 80’s. Of course the Bear creek section of the Sandy Mush Game Lands (a ten minute drive from my patch) has had a thriving group of Whip poor wills which have been heard regularly around the full moon in recent years, but we normally go looking for these around the full moons in May and June. This bird seems very early for this area. Maybe all this warm southerly wind wafted it north before its time. Doug
