Subject: [EMAS] Roy Taylor Overlook

I traveled north on the BR Parkway this morning leaving Asheville shortly after
7 am. I made several stops along the way at various lookouts, looking mainly
for the birds but also to see the Catawba Rhododendron, Flame Azalea, and
Mountain Laurel that was in bloom. Birding was fairly slow until I reached the
Spruce Trees near Richland Balsam. By far the best, and last location I
visited was the Roy Taylor Overlook at approx MP 433, arriving around 9:30, and
staying about an hour. The show started with Cedar Waxwings flying in, and
then 4 or 5 Blackburnian Warblers flew in and fussed with one another.
Black-throated Green and Chestnut-sided Warbers were also seen at this
location. What I was really hoping to see finally arrived as well, about a
dozen Crossbills flying into and among the tops of several of the Spruce Trees.
Thanks to Marilyn Westphal for the tip on finding Crossbills at this overlook.
I was there close to 30 minutes before the Crossbills arrived so you may have
to wait a bit. A few photos help capture the morning sightings.
