Friends,
Yesterday I birded at Owen Park in the early afternoon. It was fairly windy
and cold and there were very few people. But the birds were present
thankfully, and a few interesting ones appeared. Upon arrival I heard the
wonderful sound of the Baltimore Oriole singing away in trees at the corner of
the second lake by the banks of the Swannanoa River. Soon after, the male and
female met near the nest where she resumed its construction. The nest is very
near where one was last year, along the path at the far end of the second lake
half way between the picnic pavillian and the Swannanoa River. In a tree at the
corner of the second lake nearest the covered picnic pavillian, the Orchard
Oriole flew in, where there was a nest last year as well. I strolled toward
WWC along the river path to see if Bobolinks might be in the fields near the
lumber mill. None were but an Indigo Bunting was cooperative for a nice look.
I returned to the lakes for a last look at the Orioles and while watching for
them a Green Heron flew in followed by a couple of Spotted Sandpipers. Rarely
had I seen so many nice birds in a relatively short time. Photos attached.
