I birded the hills across the street from the lagoon at the Biltmore Estate
today and then checked the river and lagoon. Highlights were 10
brown-headed nuthatches and a pair of ravens. Six nuthatches were busy
taking turns excavating a cavity in a dead limb of a white oak. The ravens
were soaring high over the property. I was able to see the tail shape and
projection of bill well with binoculars. I snapped photos with a
point-n-shoot, but the pictures are tiny. Overall it was nice and birdy
there today. eBird list follows. Photos of ravens and nuthatches can be
found at eBird link.

with two or more vocalizing at the cavity and the others foraging in
adjacent limbs. With minimal foliage remaining on the tree it was easy to
get a complete count. The other four were in an oak a bit further east.
