Jim, best of luck with the heat, hopefully its not too big of a job. -----Original Message----- From: Jim <jdos@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, December 12, 2009 6:37 PM To: elky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx <elky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [elky] Re: Out the bedroom window I know what you mean about sore and tired. Most of my 'construction' weekends take a week of work to recuperate, LOL I played in the snow outside fine cleaning stuff. Got the plow truck dug out, and the walk behind blower going. Tomorrow is the task of getting a port furnace heater going in the basement. Hooked the CU line up and tried the old trick of heating the thermo couple with a torch to get the gas valve to open. Heard it click, and no joy, so I guess I'll crack the line on the rubber hose and see if I've got gas coming to the unit. More joy, but at least it's in the 20's Jim -----Original Message----- From: elky-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:elky-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of ladams21@xxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Saturday, December 12, 2009 5:27 PM To: elky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [elky] Re: Out the bedroom window >Yep, I'm probably not going to buy a bostitch floor gun.. over 400 bux, when >I can have a copy brand that should work well. Just don't over oil it. >When I rebuild I'm thinking of going with 'warmboard' for the underlay >floor.. already groved for pex.. pricey, but saves labor and is reflective Seen that stuff up north. Not available here like allot of other products. I like heated floors in cold climates as long as it's assisted by forced heated air. Heated floors are really bad in commercial apps and hangers as the sole form of heat because your feet are hot all day. On the house here it's pier and beam and floor insulation is not required however insulation against the outside rim joists and the block wall is required. 1" foam is all that's required. Few pier and beams have block and we did because of the slope of the lot but it makes for a large crawl space. >Square houses are good. :) >JD I wish it were square... Course it's better than the houses near me with the curved walls. Curved drywall isn't hard but can be sometimes. Well obviously I'm back from working on the house today... Put all the windows in but one. I just put it in the hole and looked up and saw it has a broken upper pane so will have to swap it out at HD. They are andersons lower line vinyl windows and they are pretty nice. Lower flip in. Also got the exterior doors in. Front went really well but the rear door has a little warped frame and the door is a little warped too. Will need door hardware and then I'll tweak it till I'm happy with it. As usual the sealing strips were cut too short so you can see light on it... You get what you pay for in a $100 door. Course a $500 door isn't usually much better. I really like the add on seals that are magnetic like a fridge door. Well siding will go on thursday if we work on it and if we get the siding nailer feeding right. I think it's just dirty. We have another siding nailer coming too. And got a roofing nailer for free.. All bostich. Tired and sore as usual... Can't remember. Was going to be a little bigger but there was a tree in the way that should have been cut down instead of jogged around.... I need a 15ga angled finish nailer. I don't need a roofing nailer but he did get a siding nailer off ebay and a senco screw gun for $50... Got a PC framing nailer, was my neighbors. I's fairly new but I'll take a paslode or a harbor freight framing nailer over it anyday. The Porter cable nail guns aren't very good IMO. Also brought over my senco palm nailer. Handy when you run out of nails for the nail gun or the nail gun acts up and won't feed. We are planning to put solid 3/4" oak flooring down so a floor nailer will be needed. I have used the harborfreight one and it never jammed and fired every one in right. Uses senco nails too. Great but for under $100 usually. The oak will stiffen up the floor allot and make it nice and solid. We ended up using floor rated OSB instread of ply cause that's what HD sent and it was going to take a week to get the ply in... Robert Adams How many sq ft ? I invested in all the big framing nailers, trim, finish, roof, staplers etc.. The only bostitch I don't own is the floor.. and that will come I hope next year. - when I need it. Air nail tools are wonder.. Senco stapler narrow crown too. Power tools uuggg uuugg uuggg More power -----Original Message----- From: elky-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:elky-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Robert Adams Sent: Friday, December 11, 2009 2:48 PM To: elky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [elky] Re: Out the bedroom window >Robert, >Congrats on doing a nice thing with the mission project. >You are making a big difference in someone's life. > >Jim No biggie to me. I don't mind doing those projects. I don't like doing the Habitat ones though. Nothing against it but it's set up for regular people so they only work a few hours when they do it and for me being there one day and just doing a little bit... Well as soon as you get started they are ready to call it a day. I prefer this one we are doing because basically I'm #2 in charge on site and it's allot easier to do when you are there for more than one day so you aren't playing catchup and trying to learn how someone else wants things done. The only pics I have are from the first framing day. We didn't get the beams till 1:30 and we got the I beams and LVLs in place and 90% decked by 4:00. I was nailing it down as two guys were bringing me sheets and Geri was running the adhesive (for a bit till her hands got sore cause no electric caulking gun). Most people are afraid to use big nail guns for some reason... Oh and we also framed up two of the walls that day too. http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l206/elcam84/Image183.jpg http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l206/elcam84/Image184.jpg Allot of the people that came to help I have only seen once I think they get overwhelmed by the project and don't really realize how easy it really is to build a house. Also they find out how little is actually holding it together and really I'm amazed they hold up in 75 mph winds... Just gluecoat nails and staples and a little adhesive holding the flooring down and keeping it from squeaking. They are taking pics so I'll see what ones I can come up with. Oh Plumbing and elec are going in over the next week too. I was ready to start on that but we got the labor donated by a couple companies. We will be paying to have the roof put on and the drywall taped, bed and textured. I hate doing that... So I'm hoping that drywall will start going in by next saturday unless we are still putting siding on... If it were a slab house we'd be allot further along. Same with it being bricked too. Hardi plank is really expensive now....
