*O potencial geológico nacional: uma alavanca para a retoma económica, Lisbon, Portugal, 28-29 November 2013.* The Portuguese Association of Geologists (APG) will organise its 3^rd APG days in November 2013 with the topic ‘The national geological potential: a lever for economic recovery’. The event aims at launching a reflection on the role of geological resources in the economic recovery, as it is commonly accepted internationally that only countries with natural resources can quickly overcome the deep crisis affecting the global economy. The programme intends to update knowledge of the national potential for the exploitation of mineral resources, oil and gas, in terrestrial and marine environment and highlighting the contribution that geology can provide for the country's economic development. *Seventh environmental action programme: on the path to green growth.*
In its vote of 24 October, the European Parliament called on EU member states to enforce EU environmental law more rigorously endorsing a deal with the Council of Ministers on the seventh EU environmental action programme, to run until 2020. The seventh action programme, proposed in November 2012, lists nine priority aims to be achieved by 2020, including protection of the environment and the strengthening of ecological resilience, support for sustainable and efficient growth, and protection against environmental threats to health. The new environmental action programme is to be formally approved by the Council in mid-November and published in the EU Official Journal by the end of this year. *EFG support to Non Energy Extractive Industry Panel (NEEIP) position <http://www.eurogeologists.eu/images/content/panels_of_experts/minerals_and_their_sustainable_use/2013%2009%2003_NEEIP_EIA_Comments_ENVI%20Committee_at%20EP_FINAL%20.pdf> on the report voted by the ENVI Committee on 11 July regarding the proposal amending Directive 2011/92/EU on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).* EFG supports the NEEIP concerns on the number of amendments adopted by the ENVI Committee run against the objective of a simplification of the EIA procedure. EFG is promoting high standards of reporting of mineral deposit estimates (Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves) and of exploration progress (Exploration Results), through its European Geologist <http://eurogeologists.eu/index.php?page=115> (EurGeol) professional title. In this context the title could support a "smart regulation" based on the responsibility of the professional that signs the report. The quality of the investigation, interpretation and assessment of the geological data submitted as part of an EIA should be emphasised. To achieve high standards reporting (as well as in other specialised areas) the EFG considers that there should be a requirement that a “Competent Person” signs off each specialised report. The recognition of these “competent persons” in Europe, as CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) does internationally, could be a substantial support for the European mining industry, and the EIA reports.

*In-depth report on sustainable phosphorus use. *
We are facing a critical phosphorus challenge, as developments in industry, agriculture, waste handling and lifestyle have massively reduced the capacity for this important element to be cycled effectively by society and the environment via natural geological processes. The major source of phosphorus used in fertiliser is phosphate rock, which is mined in vast quantities, more than can be replaced by the slow geological cycle. The In-depth Report examines scientific knowledge on the phosphorus challenge and recent research into the sustainable use of the element. You can download the report at: http://ec.europa.eu/environment/integration/research/newsalert/pdf/IR7.pdf

*EU conflict minerals law hangs in the balance.*
EurActiv reveals that the planned certification scheme to prevent warlords funding their militias by selling minerals to European mineral extraction firms has been delayed. The EU’s trade directorate had been expected <http://www.prnewswire.co.uk/news-releases/european-conflict-minerals-legislation-expected-by-the-end-of-2013--ipoint-conducts-conflict-minerals-study-for-the-european-commission-226152621.html> to publish a regulation in this matter by the end of this year. EU sources confirm furthermore that new laws will only cover gold and the ‘Three T’s’ – tin, tungsten, and tantalum. The impact assessment into new conflict minerals law is expected to be finalised by the end of the year. In spring 2014 the Commission may then present a new proposal and communication on conflict minerals. *Digging for Treasure: Mining in Global Perspective, Ruhr Museum, Essen, Germany, 21-23 November 2013.* This conference will bring together a range of international experts on the history of mining to ask where mining history is going today. What have been areas for research that produced promising studies over the years? How does the state-of-the-art in mining history look in those diverse areas? And where should mining historians turn for keeping the subject at the cutting edge of the discipline. Whilst contributors invariably have particular strength in specific geographical areas of the world, they will at least attempt global overviews of their particular specialist fields in mining history. As global history has been remarkably successful in transforming the writing of history over recent years, the conference also attempts to find out to what extent a truly global activity, mining, can benefit from developing transnational perspectives on its history.

*North Atlantic Craton Conference 2014, University of St Andrews, Scotland, 20-21 March 2014.* The organising committee of the NAC Conference 2014 invites you to attend a two day conference on craton specific exploration targeting, using the North Atlantic Craton (NAC) as the area of interest. This workshop on the mineral potential of the North Atlantic Craton (NAC) as a whole is aimed at initiating and furthering trans-Atlantic collaboration in understanding the Archaean cratonic controls on ore deposit formation through time. The Archaean high-grade gneiss terrain of the NAC stretches from Labrador, Canada, through Greenland and into NW Scotland, UK. Acceleration in exploration efforts for various commodities across this region, particularly in Greenland, has highlighted the potential of its mineral resources. More recently, the importance of a craton-specific approach to mineral exploration has been realised. More information: http://www.nac-conference2014.org.uk/

*Shale gas firms to be brought under ‘robust’ new EU law.*
According to EurActiv, shale gas companies operating in Europe will soon have to respect a new legislative package which the European Commission is preparing to publish in December or January. The new rules will most probably take the form of an unconventional fuels directive, similar to other EU laws covering wastewater and environmental impact assessments. The legislation will set down rules for dealing with the risks of: Venting and flaring of greenhouse gases; Seismic disturbances ; Groundwater contamination and management of the water supply and reserves; Impacts on air quality, and noise emissions; Associated infrastructural problems caused by heavy industrial activity. The European Commission is expected to publish the results of a public consultation on unconventional fossil fuels, including shale gas in December or January. *Coastal flooding: failing to adapt is not an option, says study*
Climate change will lead to an increased risk of flooding and huge economic losses if countries do not invest in appropriate adaptation measures, according to a new study. This recent research estimates the risks posed by flooding to cities around the world and the associated economic losses in 2005 and 2050, and suggests that flood protection must be increased to maintain the same level of risk to coastal cities.
