After reading the three discussions on PowerPoint, I began to consider
it's use in the classroom. PowerPoint can be a useful tool, but is the output
worth the input?
The first of the three articles compared PowerPoint to electronic mail.
Unfortunately, electronic mail is not conviently used in my classroom.
However, the author pointed out that PowerPoint presentations are still just
that,
presentations. PowerPoint does not exactly get students actively involved in
their learning. The author went on to list characteristics of effective
teaching, PowerPoint did not meet the criteria for student centered learning.
The next article discussed how PowerPoint can be counter effective if not
used properly. The author mentioned PowerPoint's ability to "sell"
information, and that PowerPoint may be substituting the real reasons for
obtaining
information. The last article countered the discussion with some of
PowerPoint's
practical uses.
I think that PowerPoint can be an effective tool, but I can see where it
could fall short. PowerPoint can be used to get information to students
simply in replace of handouts. It can also be a media for students to present
information that they have gathered. Slides can be used as a decorative topic
board to lead a discussion or to bring visual associations together with new
information. Students can also create PowerPoint presentations, making the
activity more student-centered. Students can also view presentations
individually,
so that they are involved in the control of the presentation. Of course,
availability and access are issues, as the third author mentioned. If
PowerPoint
is not convienient to a particular classroom, it is rendered useless. The
article also pointed out that PowerPoint is easily replaced by creative visuals
and paper handouts. Overall, I think PowerPoint is a useful tool, but we made
need more tools for getting students involved and not just another way to lead
a presentation.
