Speaker: Matt Chipman, EDAX

Topic: Electron Backscatter Diffraction

An introduction to the technique of Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) will be given. Useful analyses on microelectronic devices will be shown including maps displaying texture and defect analysis. Quantitative analysis of microstructural components will be shown including grain size, shape and orientation statistics. Analysis of grain boundaries as they relate to electronic properties will be given. Practical limits on resolution of the technique will be discussed as well as sample preparation techniques. Questions and discussion regarding overall capability of the EBSD data acquisition and analysis are encouraged.

Speaker's Bio:

Matt Chipman has a degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Utah. He began his involvement with EBSD in 1997 while working for TexSEM Laboratories in Provo, UT. His early responsibilities included engineering, service, tech support and applications support for EBSD systems sold worldwide. He now sells a full suite of microanalysis tools with EDAX including EBSD, EDS,WDS and micro-spot XRF but still has a passion for EBSD equipment and applications. Matt currently resides in Utah and enjoys spending time outdoors skiing and mountain biking.
