The internal and external structure of the object can then be viewed at any cross-section, point, or angle. CT allows the documentation and memorialization of an object, in its entirety, without destructive analysis and allows movement through the object to view any area of interest. This technology is ideal for failure analysis, nondestructive evaluation or metrology, and forensic artifact investigation. The purpose of this presentation is to further define CT and demonstrate its capabilities. We also make recommendations as to when CT should be used and touch on more advanced post-processing capabilities. Speaker Bio: Dr. Richards is a Staff Consultant with ESI (Engineering Systems Inc.) in Dallas, Texas. She obtained a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. Prior to joining ESI, she gained experience in the design and implementation of aircraft cooling systems. Additionally, she has conducted research relating to the gas transport and internal-reforming chemistry of alternative fuels within various solid oxide fuel cell anode support materials. She has designed, built, and optimized a unique experimental reactor, a protocol utilizing both mass spectrometry (MS) and gas chromatography (GC), and a computational model for the analysis of fuel cell anodes. Dr. Richards also has experience with ceramics processing and material microstructure characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosimetry, and gas-transport analysis. She has additional experience in the dispersion and measurement of aerosols. Dr. Richards has been involved in fire, explosion, and aircraft investigations, including a large-scale industrial plant explosion. In addition to participating in on-site investigations, she also specializes in computer modeling of fluid, combustion, and chemical processes. She performs tasks for laboratory-based investigations, including stereomicroscopy, SEM, and CT Scanning. Dr. Richards is experienced in CT data analysis and post-processing.
