Don,

If not binding, I'd settle for proofreading.

Steve,

Brilliant idea; having the volumes available as separate files would, as you say, allow for distributed production; thanks so much. Now, if we could only get the software to bind them!

Don,

This is a helpful and very well thought out addition to Duxbury. I can
think of only one more useful control: one that indicates whether the
volumes should be made into separate files, one for each volume. If so, the
files could be named using a convention like "MyFile(V1)", "MyFile(V2)",
etc. followed by the appropriate extension (probably .DXB). I find it
easier to emboss one volume at a time because paper handling is unwieldy
when the stack gets bigger than 100 sheets. I also use two embossers to
speed up production on multiple volumes. Thanks again for a very valuable
suggestion, and for taking the time to think it out so well.

Subject: [duxuser] Volume Creation: a very much needed feature in Duxbury

Hi All,

The following note is long, but it describes a feature
enhancement/request which I believe, if implemented, would significantly
increase the efficiency of the production of Braille materials by
non-printing house Duxbury users, as well as enhance the professional
quality of final embossed documents. If you agree, share your thoughts
please and get this to the right person at DS.

I have recently had the occasion to emboss a number of large Word
documents for Federal meetings which have resulted in hundreds of
finished Braille pages which I have had to bind.

As part of this process, I have had to make arbitrary decisions as to
volume divisions, and since I have had to do this using the finished
Braille product, the divisions have looked quite unprofessional, with
volumes ending in the middle of a sentence and having no "end of volume"
notification, volume title pages, or volume contents.

It occurs to me that a "create volumes" dialog box would make this job
so much easier, and would facilitate the production of more
professional-looking materials. I believe that this feature should be a
necessary part of any mature Braille transcription program, especially
since the production of multi-volume materials is so very commonplace.

A dialog box listing a sample set of controls for such a feature might
contain the following elements. This would be run on the .dxb file.

Binder Size: a select box listing the standard Krebs, spiral, and other
common Braille binders which are in common use. Using this binder size
setting, Duxbury could easily determine the number of volumes needed
given the total number of translated pages.

Adjust volume Size: This would bring up an edit box which would be
prepopulated with the number as determined by the prior binder size
setting and the total number of pages. The user can here override the
volume size if they either want to stuff the volumes or shrink them to
leave extra room in the binder.

Divide at nearest heading? y/n: If yes, the nearest heading to each
volume division would be used as the beginning for the next volume with
the appropriate "end of volume x" note at the end of the prior volume.
If set to no, the division would be by the divisible number of pages and
force a page and "End of Volume" note at the end of the appropriate
sentence.

Allowable Number of Pages to search for Heading: would provide an edit
box where user would put a number of pages the program could move
backward or forward from a volume division to find the dividing header.
Thus, if the user entered 20, Duxbury would look backward and forward 20
Braille pages from the divisible volume division to find a header for
the actual volume division. Its purpose would be to ensure that volumes
weren't expanded or shrunken too much in searching for headings to use.
If not found, an error message would display telling the user that
numeric divisions must be used as heading divisions cannot be found.

Produce Title Page for Each Volume? y/n: If set to yes, a number of
Edit boxes would appear where information such as title, copyright date,
producing organization, transcriber's name and organization, number of
volumes, etc. This information could automatically be centered
according to NLS specs for the Braille production of title pages. If
set to no, all would proceed with out title pages.

Once completed, the Table of Contents generation feature would, when
invoked for the document, generate a total Table of Contents in Volume
I, and tables of contents for each subsequent volume automatically when
invoked on the .dxb file.

In addition, centered cover pages could be automatically generated and
embossed, as well as the insertion of form feeds to expel blank back
pages for each volume.

Thanks all for reading this.
