Hi Nancy, Neal has just pointed out a couple of omissions on my part. This has also become an interesting thread as regards tables, so apologies if I appear to be answering questions which have not been asked. First, be careful with "Training Spaces" after column entries. The "could" make a field just one character too long. Second, you can in fact use the keyboard tab key instead of the [#..] Code if you wish. Personally I like to use the full code as it makes it very clear which column I want the following text placed. In fact, thinking about it, if there was ever a likelihood of having to add a column before the last on a long table, you would then be able to use Search and Replace to change the [#...] Code's number. At the risk of confusing you, let me try and explain for everyone's benefit. Say I want to add a column in your example after the third column, this is what I (personally) would do. It also assumes I only have one table in my document, or that I want a column added to other tables in exactly the same place. First, make sure you have Codes in view. Second, place your cursor at the beginning of the table or document. Third, go to Edit, Replace. My sequence in DBT's Edit: Replace would be With your cursor in the in the Search for box: Hold down Ctrl and press left square bracket. (Or simply press F9) Type the following #4 This field should now read [#4] Now tab to the Replace with box. In the Replace with box: Hold down Ctrl and press left square bracket. (Or simply press F9) Type the following #4 Press the End key to come out of the Code Then type -- Hold down Ctrl and press left square bracket. (Or simply press F9) Then type #5 This field should now read [#4]--[#5] Now click on the O.K. button. All being well, you will then see a dialog pop with the first occurrence of the [#4] Code. You will have a choice including Replace and Replace All. If you are confident, click on Replace all. You will now see that your table includes an extra column between the third and what was the fourth column containing 2 dashes. You can now go about replacing the two dashes with whatever text you want. George. I can only guess that you have an incorrect character in that very first line in your DBT document, which is in fact correct in your message below. I have attached what I believe to be an exact copy of yours, so perhaps try copying and pasting into your own file, and see if you can spot any difference. If all else fails, feel free to send me (OFF LIST) your pre-translated .dxp file and I'll see if I can spot the problem - send it to george@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx George. I originally inserted the code by pressing F5 to bring up the codes window, typing the code I wanted in the "code parameters" box, then clicking the OK button. At the time I couldn't figure out any other way to get the code I specifically wanted into the document, you can tell I'm not a power user here! But now, after reading a bit more, I see it is either F9 or typing ctrl + [ . Wow, learn something new every day! Here is the code I put in using that method: [tx][g1][ctb][stb1:l:3][stb2:l:12][stb3:l:16][stb4:l:20][l] [#1]abe [#2]ne [#3]u [#4]nook[l] [#1]somebody [#2]me [#3]to [#4]spoke[l] I recall reading something about NOT imbedding one code within another, is the fact that the [tx][g1] is preceding the tabs preventing it from working? At the time when I first tried it, that first line of code defining the tabs was also within a </B-Body Text> for a previous paragraph (also coding created by MS Word). I tried it again without the code being "imbedded" in other code, and it still didn't work. What I get is the first word "abe" left aligned to column 3, but then the next three words are right aligned to the far right edge of the document, on succeeding lines. The next set of words is similar, "somebody" is left aligned to column 3, then me, to, and spoke are right aligned on the far right edge. So it takes up 8 lines total, instead of being in columns on two lines. Any suggestions as to how I can get this to work? What am I doing wrong?
