I agree with Dorothy that the winter is a great time for a vacation. My
concern would be for older horses, say in their late teens that are hard to get
back after a few months off. I was raised in Virginia. I did ride all though
the winter, but when the footing got too soupy or sticky for regular work, I
would concentrate on the walk. You can keep horses quite fit at the walk
(hills help), have a relaxed time, and do just a bit of longitudinal and
lateral work in the bargin.
