Hi Cathy
You are welcome and we're glad it has been useful, if not confounding!
Yes, numbers were issued numerically. 9126 doesn't show up in 1924-25 so
it began its life in the mid 1920s. The plate would have continued to be
used thereafter - so it could very possibly have been on another car and/or
belonged to someone else at a later date.
Best wishes
Andrew

Andrew,
Thank you so much.
This is great.
Are there lists for earlier than 1917-18?
However, on reflection I'm not sure they'd help in the puzzle you've set
me.
I have an early undated photo taken in Dalwallinu with the back of a car
showing numberplate 9126. And I presume plates were issued in numerical
order and this one wouldn't have been issued before 1917?
This is showing up in your lists as belonging to F. J. Duffield 1925-26
and 1927-28 and in between to F. C. Duffield with same address. This
1) suggests the photo is at least 10 years older than I thought
and 2) poses the question of who F. J. Duffield was and why his car is at
I think my grandparents place in Dalwallinu neatly parked in a bush
shelter. It's not a name I've come across before.
Thanks,
Cathy

The index is now online and be searched or browsed at:
