oh yes I forgot about the presonus firebox, a very good and stable card too.
I did have issues with my fp10 because the earlier models had a problem with
the chip when it came to using on different firewire chipset ports. But
recently I just finished with a client in Quebec, and I even had the chance
to test with my laptop and the new fp10 doesn't crackle any more. Definatly
go for the firebox, and the quality as the construction is much better then
the FA66, or the UA1001, and if you can afford it, the motu 8pre is also a
fantastic card too, the only problem with this card is the interface,
however I'm finding more and more that you can actually get away with out
using the interface if you are using sonar 8, and Ct 8, the responce with
direct monitoring with Sonar 8, and two cards that I own the line6, and motu
8pre to be great when using direct monitoring otherwise known as input
monitoring. To conclude, its really going to be your taste that is going to
determine what you end up choosing, and also your need. If i were you I
would go down to your local music shop and here them or test them out.
However Bill at Dancing dots does also distribute the cards too,, and has
some really kick ass prices.

With that budget in mind, I really liked the EDIROL FA-66 Firewire card.
It
sounds great, and is extremely stable.
Cakewalk rebranded the FA-66 and call it the SPS-66. They publish their
own
drivers for it which are optimized for use with SONAR. You should find
them
on their site by following their support link.
Also, although it may be stretching your budget a bit, consider the
Presonus
Firebox. We've supplied the Firebox to many customers and they have been
happy. I use one myself. For details, see
http://www.dancingdots.com/prodesc/soundcards.htm and press the letter h
until to reach the heading for the Presonus Firebox.
