gordon,
the problem was the windows task bar was obscuring the sonar status bar
because it had somehow become double sized. I set taskbar options to stop
taskbar from staying on top of windows and it cleared things up.

There are two possiblites I can think of. One, you may have some other
windo open like a plug-in or something, or the large transport may be
displayed. Take a look at the bottom of the screen with the jaws cursor.

Now I'm getting something happening when I try to skip to columns that
doesn't seem right.
I can do a single shift+letter to hear the columns, but when I do a
double press to move there I get the following message from CT:
"except for skipping to the name column, skipping to other columns is
only possible when the all track tab is selected. So, first press shift
plus the right or left arrows until you hear all"
When I do that, I get the message: "next track tab(or prior track if i
use left arrow) , please press F6 to maximize your windows"
Pressing F6 has no effect--the same message comes up time and time again.
any ideas?
