Yes they'll be recording an entire cd. The room will be pretty well padded up,
so it'll be quite dry. Is there any way to record each drum part onto a
separate track?

I've not personally tried to mic up drums, however, I saw your emails and I
was thinking even it you have a separate sub mixer, you'll still be recording
to two tracks.
The mixer will allow you to EQ each channel and Pan, the problem will be
doing the final mix in Sonar, you won't be able to isolate separate drums, to
gate, compress or add reverb effects,
What's the ambiance of the room like where the drums will be recorded?
This is not going to be easy mate.
It maybe cheaper to hire some thing like the Roland TD range of electronic
drum Kits.
At least you won't need 5 drum microphones plus a mixer.
Record the midi as well as the audio then, get the guys to leave the drum kit
at yours, after the guys have gone, you can play the performance back through
midi and record each drum on to separate audio tracks.

yes I do have an adat port. Do you have any recommendations for having 6
preamp inputs in one unit? Outside of having a mixer, I'm not familiar with
something like this. What kind of unit am I looking for?

If you have an ADAT port on the fireface then, you could use some
pree-amps with an ADAT port instead.

Hello,
I'm going to be recording live instruments soon, and it's the first
time I've done this. I'm using the RME fireface 800, and it has only 2 mic
inputs. I'll be recording live drums, and I'll need about 6 mics for those. If
the fireface has only 2 mic inputs, what's the best solution to record all the
drums at the same time? Would i need to use a mixer for the extra mic inputs,
or is there another alternative?
