Hi Jeanette!!

There are several EQ plug-ins that ship with Sonar that are accessible. You could ether go over to the affects bin on an audio track, press the context key, and from the audio affects menu, choose the Cakewalk parametric EQ. Note: the Cakewalk Parametric EQ isn't installed by default so, you may need to put in your Sonar CDE, and from the audio affects option, choose the Cakewalk Parametric EQ. Note: when in the audio affects option box in the Sonar installation, you would probably be best to first select the nun button. This will insure that when you actually install the Cakewalk Parametric EQ, nun of your other affects will be affected.

This plug-in is a 4 band parametric EQ. Once you have opened the Cakewalk Parametric EQ's Window, you will be on the interface that has several items. The first selection of buttons you will be presented with, after the preset box, and the save, cancel and reset buttons, is a set of radio buttons.. For example, if you wanted to work on band 4 in the EQ then, you would arrow down to the band 4 radio button. Once you have selected the band you want, tab over. The next item in the list is the gain slider for that band. You can move this with the CT selection keys. Tab again, and you will find the edit field for the gain slider. In other words, if you don't want to use the gain slider itself then, you can enter values directly for the gain in the next field across. If you keep tabbing across the plug-in Window, then, you will presented with other sliders, followed by edit fields. The other sliders are frequency and Q. Keep tabbing and you will find other buttons, such as the "bypass button. All of these buttons and knobs, have hotkeys assigned to them.

The second option would be to use the Sonatus EQ. I am assuming in all of this that you are using Sonar 4 Producer? If you aren't then, this plug-in won't be available, and isn't on the Sonar installation CD. If you are then, this plug-in will have been installed by default. To access all of the parameters for it, when in the track view, press the tab key on the track where you wish to use the Sonatus EQ. Now, arrow down to the button to turn this affect on. Press the enter key over the button. That will have activated the EQ for the track you are on.

We now need to get to all of the EQ's controls. This is achieved by using the keys that move the user to different items in the track inspector view such as the volume, EQ, and affects controls. To move to the above mentioned controls, use the key combination, Shift and right arrow or, shift and left arrow. CT will say something like EQ controls displayed, affects controls displayed or volume control displayed. This will depend on which controls you have landed on at the time. Once you have found the EQ controls, you can use the shift and down or, shift and up arrow keys. This will alter how many parameters are displayed. Because you are on the EQ, using this keystroke, will alter how many bands of the EQ are displayed on screen. The Sonatus EQ is actually a 6 band parametric EQ however, it is only possible to access 4 bands of the EQ in the track inspector view.

You can then use the down arrow keys to get to the various sliders for the gain, Q exedra. You can also alter what type of filter you are using on each band E.G, low shelf exedra. This is achieved by ether pressing the enter key over the control for the band or, by using the context key whilst over the button for the filter selection. It's ashamed really that we can't access all 6 bands because, you can actually access 4 of the 6 bands from the track inspector, in the same way that you access all of the filters for each band as outlined above. In other words, you don't need to have all 4 bands displayed at the time. It is possible to just display one band of EQ in the track inspector then, whilst over the band selection button, ether press the enter key or, use the context key to select band 2, 3 or, 4. The great thing about the track inspector view is that it can display parameters of other plug-ins as well. Using the track inspector, is really the only way to access all of the Sonatus affects plug-ins that ship with Sonar.

Having said that, if you can get your head around the track inspector then, it's worth it, as all of the Sonatus suite plug-ins are excellent. The Sonatus Suite of plug-ins are by far, the best audio plug-ins that ship with Sonar. The only exception to this is the Lexicon Pantheon reverb which, I personally think is the best software reverb I have ever heard.

I personally haven't bothered purchasing many third party plug-ins as there is no need to. The only exception to this is the Wave Arts Final Plug which, is a mastering compressor with a built-in brickwall limiter.

Also, using the track inspector, can sometimes expose third party plug-ins such as the Wave Arts ones. I am sure this is true for the Waves stuff as well. Of course, once you have got the EQ sounding as you wish, you can arrow down, press the enter key and save your presets, directly from the track inspector.

Subject: [ddots-l] accessible EQ plugings

Hi,

I use Sonar 4 producer and Caketalking. I can do pretty much everything with sonar, eq. I am fed up with always having to have a sighted person eq my tracks. Are there any plugins that work and if so, how do I set them up.

Many many thanks,
Jeanette

Subject: [ddots-l] To Gord, Delta Audio, SoundMax, and The Mixer

Hi again, Gord!

Okay, I inserted Edirol Orchestral, and I can hear it from the computer's speakers. And I can hear the midi keyboard's patches from my mini-stereo speakers.
#1. I remember telling you that Soundmax is the first priority card in my computer, and that you said that Delta Audio should be first, so how do you make the switch? Is there anything else I need to check or do in that area?
#2. I have my mixer set up so that the midi keyboard and computer communicate with each other, but the audio cables on the cable array that goes into the computer are not connected to anything. Is there anything more I should check or do with this equipment?

thanks in advance! I really appreciate your service, and Dancing Dots!

Sharon
