That's what I was doing, but it seems like I can only select by using
control shift end and control shift home. Maybe I had the zoom too small,
because any other method of selecting doesn't seem to be working.

Shift and the left and right arrows, ctrl+shift and arrows for larger
increaments, shift page up and page down,, ctrl+home or end etc. Kind o like
a word processor. Also, you can set mark in and out points with I and o.
When using the arrows, you can use the up and down keys to zoom in and out.
