Even an error alert of some kind, maybe just a beep or tone, could sound when any of the conditions where overlapping is possible occur. These are all outlined in the tutorial, things like "this and that share both placed above the staff" or "if you have a trumpet that plays above this note, it can overlap with x". This wouldn't be fail-safe, but it would alert the user to possible overlaps. It's tricky to remember every possible situation wehre overlapping may occur, especially when you get into extracting parts for transposing instruments.
