Hi Phil, the problem with the pre-amps is that they don't have clock sync over
adat. The older models did because they came with an adat card connected. At
least for the octo pre, there is no way to sync via adat, even though some
models have an adat in, I don't know if those all sync though. If you get one
that can sync via adat, once you set your liquid 56 as master and the pre as
slave, the adat sync should take place from the ls56. I'm not sure why they
didn't just set the adat sync in all devices, but since the octo pre and pro40
were the same price, I figured the pro40 has adat sync and has added channels
if I decide to use it in dual mode, giving me 40 ins and 40 outs. Right now is
serving a slave pre-amp though.

I see. Well using a Liquid 56 with all aDAT ports connected and it doesn't
matter if I change the sample rate on the Liquid56 then I have to also change
the sample rate on the Focusrite MKII Dynamic and this happens even if I am
only using one of those and I have 2 connected. No so far no Windows drivers
for Claret interfaces.

Yeah Phil, by design they make it so that you have to resync with sample rate.
Since my rack is tucked away in a corner, that wasn't too convenient, so I got
a pair of pro40's to tackle the issue, since when you connect both adat
in/outs, they will stay in sync. I was thinking of using them in dual mode with
the drivers, but since I already had the setup for master/slave, I kept it that
way.
Regarding claret, I thought windows drivers had already been released?

Agreed. Not sure you would need a master clock source at all. Further more
even if you are using an interface with wordclock and devices don't
automatically sync when you change sample rate etc then it's simple to press
the sample rate button on the device that hasn't synced to the master clock
source. Come to think of it nun of my Focusrite gear automatically syncs to
the Liquid 56 if I change sample rate. From what I remember this behaviour is
intentional as Focusrite expect you to press the sample rate button to
reacquire sync. Finally, I checked and it seems that there are no Windows
drivers available for the claret interfaces.

Kevin, If you only have 1 interface and no external pre-amps, a master clock
isn't needed. Even if you got a preamp like the octo pre, it would sync the
18i20 to itself and eliminate any jitter problems. If you plan to do allot of
sample rate switching between programs however, this solution might prove to be
a challenge, since the external clock won't know to switch the rate.
For that you would need a pre-amp that will sync to the 18i20 so that when it
switches rates, the sync device will follow.
If you post what other gear you plan to use, now or down the line, we can
better determine if you'll need a master clock.
Question, since you're building from scratch, why not go thunderbolt with
something like the claret line? Better roundtrip latency when configured
properly with the right card.
From what I've heard the pre-amps on that sucker are no joke either. ;)

Subject: [ddots-l] OT master clock suggestions needed for new studio redesign
guys,
I'm in the process of rebuilding my studio from the ground up. New DAW, new
audio interface, new MIDi interface, more hardware. One of the things I might
want is a new master clock to replace the MOTU Digital Timepiece i have now.
The DTP is a one space unit. My projected studio redesign may not have space
for that. Is there another box that can be used for a master clock, should I
need one, that comes in a half-rack box? FYI, I'm planning to use a Scarlet
1820I as my audio interface with an additional MOTU Micro Express for
additional MIDi I/O if I need it. so, any thoughts RE master clock would be
useful.
Thanks,
Kevin
