You can get an m-audio oxygen 61 (61 key) midi controler for about $140. It's
got plenty of faders and knobs for editing. It also has both USB and midi
options to connect it. If you use the midi option, you'll have to buy a power
adapter separately for it. I had one myself, but never utilized all of its
functions. I'm not much of a fan of midi controlers and prefer full-blown
synths instead.

Subject: [ddots-l] Cheaper accessible midi controllers?
OK, what's the deal with midi controllers? I mean, seriously. I have
one of those cheap learning keyboards, I think I got it for like $50, it
was on sale but still. It has speakers, plays a bunch of demo songs,
its own sounds, typical standard 61 full keys keyboard. So here's my
question.
Are there any cheaper accessible and decent midi controllers? I mean,
the axiom, which I admit looks pretty nice, is like $200 plus for a
25-key model. OK, my keyboard has no velocity etc. and no mod and
pitchbend wheels, etc., but then the midi controllers have no sounds of
their own. And what's the deal with everything being USB? I have a
midi interface, I don't really need the USB capability. Is there
anything that's cheaper and just hooks up to the midi interface I've
already got? I don't understand the crazy prices in midi controllers.
I mean, hell, I could probably get a vaguely decent mid-level keyboard
with wheels and sensitivity and such with midi capability for the price
of most midi controllers, why don't I just do that? Obviously the midi
controller has more controls for midi, sliders and such, that another
keyboard probably wouldn't have, and really I don't use my keyboard for
anything but soft synth control now, hence the interest in a midi
controller. But I'm really wondering, with the prices, if a midi
controller is really giving me enough value Vs. a different keyboard,
for what I'd pay for one.
