I tested the fa66 myself and liked it. It works great at low latency, has quiet mic preamps, and does have an accessible control pannel.

Yes, I took a screen shot of my custom selections and emailed it to dancing dots as I was instructed. The hard drive mess up I was prepared to live with, but these hardware problems, in addition to that, got me a little shook up. I just need someone to work with me on the soundcard issue so I can live with this purchase.

The USB audiophile problem could have been a quirk(it worked with the older drivers, but not the newest drivers). I just figured a new system wouldn't have problems with top name manufacturers like MAudio.

I'm zeroing in on the edirol FA66 for reasons of price and usability, but I would like to talk with someone at DD for confirmation on a few points -- Bill told me they were having good results with the FA66 and it fits my price range. If its more or less accessible then that's what I'll get.

I am very sorry that you are having so much trouble. Obviously we want you to be happy, and I am concerned because I recommended ADK in the first place. I really think they will do the right thing and straighten you out. They really are in the business of building DAWS. Did you go up on their website yourself to hand pick the configuration you wanted?

I'm willing to go firewire in order to save my sanity with this laptop. My problem is that(because of my experiences with both USB & Cardbus soundcards thus far) I don't trust either USB or Cardbus on this system. Without intelligent and succinct answers as to why things don't work, its hard to feel confident enough to shell out more money for a firewire interface. I fear if I buy a FA66 and it doesn't work either, I'll go mad. Seriously, I need some tech help or I'm going to have to return this machine.

I think that because my order was screwed up by dancingDots (wrong disk drive installed 60GB instead of the 80GB I paid for), and Cardbus and USB difficulties, I have a good reason to expect a refund if it comes to that. Would you please speak with Bill about this problem, I'll be calling them monday, and I need their attention on this problem.

thanks Gordon,

Phil (whose trying hard to keep a positive attitude)

Phil:
While the audiophiles usb is certainly a good choice for the casual user, if you are planning to use your laptop like a real daw, a replacement for a desktop system, you really should go with firewire or a high-end pcmcia solution like the Emu 1616. Also, the motu 828 interface is great, and some folks have been using the RME stuff.

no. I planned on using the echo indigo which is a type II cardbus card and is highly rated for laptop soundcards. As a second choice, I planned to use the MAudio audiophile USB --another high quality card. Neither works on this system. I have one last option and I'm going to experiment with lowering the graphics acceleration settings which hopefully will free up enough system resources for these cards to work.

Sandy, please give me the specifics of the card you use and how well its been working for you. The more details the better--including the firewire card brand and model as well as the soundcard itself.

It seems firewire is the way to go with this laptop because there's not much resource allocation conflict with the firewire card. I just can't afford to to make any more mistakes on hardware--it gets a bit expensive.

Did you order your Laptop with a firewire card?

At 10:31 PM 3/2/2007, you wrote:
I haven't yet called DancingDots, but I called ADK today and I swear the guy sounded like he couldn't give a damm and didn't even know the specifics of the laptop system. I got the feeling they just threw it together and called it a DAW.

MAudio basically told me to forget about using the Audiophile USB on the system once they looked over the IRQ resource allocations. There suggestion was to try using different USB ports and if that didn't help... I got the same inoperability with the MAudio Audiophile on all USB ports.

On my HP laptop, the echo indigo soundcard works like a dreambecause it has sole use of IRQ 17 (probably just the luck of the draw). On the ADK it sounds like its been buried in river mud. Again, IRQ resource allocations seem to be the culpret as the video chipset is hogging all the resources on the IRQ that it shares with the USB and Cardbus. So, the USB ports(where the audiophileUSB soundcard would go), the PC Cardbus (where the echo indigo goes) and the graphics all share the same IRQ 16, and, the graphics always win in resource allocation which leaves the other devices sucking wind. There is graphics acceleration which I suppose could be reduced to free up some resources, but thats not an acceptable solution for the cost.

I don't know all this for absolutely sure, but from talking with the techs at MAudio, looking over the system device info, and what I've experienced with both soundcards thus far, its hard to see a bright side.

I sure hope you're right Luis, and I'll give it a few days and wait to talk with some people from DancingDots and ADK(again), but right now, from what I've experienced thus far, this isn't a DAW, its a
DOG

To anyone who is using an ADK laptop purchased from ADK (either directly or via dancing dots), please chime in and give me the details of the soundcard you are using.

Please be specific as to connection (firewire, USB etc), Brand & model, and any quirky little problems you've encountered. I am having tremendous trouble with this system and am all but determined to return this machine.

Please help me to understand the problems I've encountered by giving me details of your successful implementations.

As I've been able to determine thus far, the graphics card (Envidia) is stacked on the same IRQ as the Cardbus controller and USB controller and something else I can't remember, and this configuration has made USB soundcard(audiophileUSB) completely unusable, and the cardbus virtually unusable. I don't know if this is a standard configuration, or if the tech guy was having a really bad day.

Okay, I'll spare you all the full depth of my disgust... Please chime in with details of your system configurations if you would

Thanks,
