Thanks Niels & Robert. Turns out the issue was simply that it was muted.
What threw me was that I was still getting sound on hw0,1, so it didn't
occur to me that I should double-check my levels. But apparently if you
mute these cards it only mutes the "real" input channel on hw0,0. Weird.
