Greetings from Barbara

|
|
| Hello Blues Fans:
Here at The Blues Foundation, we've got the International Blues Challenge on
our brains. Local blues challenges are wrapping up, and IBC Act registration
deadlines are fast approaching. I'm working on the schedule for IBC week. Joe
is reaching out to all of our Affiliates to make sure that they are ready to
register their best bands, solo/duo acts, and Youth Showcase participants.
Stephen is connecting with our downtown Memphis hotels for discounted room rate
reservations for Blues Foundation members, and Elizabeth is processing ticket
sales and creating some wonderful IBC merchandise for you. We are revving up
for the thousands of blues lovers to come to Memphis in January. Don't delay -
get your tickets now!
This year's IBC promises to be bigger and better than ever. We're adding panels
and workshops to the schedule to appeal to all segments of IBC attendees. We'll
have activities for the fans and support for the industry. We're planning
educational opportunities for your Blues Society leadership so that they can
build your local organizations and blues scenes. We're coordinating tours for
our Youth Showcase artists, master classes for our musicians, and lots of music
for everyone. And you never know - there might be some surprises thrown in, as
well, for good measure.
There are definite benefits to being a member of The Blues Foundation, and when
it comes to the IBC, one of those benefits is first access to purchase IBC
passes and upgrades. We expect premium finals seating to sell out and we
anticipate a capacity crowd at the Keeping the Blues Alive Brunch. We are also
sharing our discounted room blocks with members first. You've been loyal to The
Blues Foundation by supporting us with your membership dollars, and in return,
we want to make sure that you can get a downtown hotel room, near all the
action, before they are all spoken for. Both the Westin and The Hampton have
each already sold out of IBC rooms, and we expect as the event approaches, it
will get harder and harder to get a room within walking distance to Beale
Street. If you are a current member of The Blues Foundation and did not keep
the email we sent on the first of October with hotel information, just contact
Stephen Whitney (stephen@xxxxxxxxx or 901-527-2583 ext. 10) in our offices and
he will get that information to you. Go ahead and book your rooms now - we'll
be opening our room blocks to the general public next week.We don't want any of
our members to miss out on the Biggest Blues Party on Beale Street!

assist you as you plan your trip. Please do not hesitate to call or email us
and we'll do our best to answer your questions and to meet your needs.
Bluesy regards,
Barbara

| Signed Hard Promises album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
| Hard Promises is the fourth album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
released in May, 1981. The album features guest vocals from Stevie Nicks of
Fleetwood Mac on the duet "Insider." During the recording of the album John
Lennon was scheduled to be in the same studio at the same time, and Tom Petty
was looking forward to meeting him when he came in. The meeting never occurred;
John Lennon was murdered before he could ever make it into the studio. In order
to pay tribute to one of their influences the band decided to etch "WE LOVE YOU
JL" on the master copy of the album. To this day "WE LOVE YOU JL" is seen on
every Hard Promises first issue US non-masterphile vinyl copy pressed. This is
clear on this album! The album's title comes from a line in the chorus of
"Insider." In addition, Donald "Duck" Dunn plays bass guitar on "A Woman in
Love." This signed record is a MUST HAVE for any audiophile!

The Blues Hall of Fame Museum:
What's Happening
|
|
|
|
Biographer of Blues Legend Slim Harpo at the Blues Hall of Fame Museum
Martin Hawkins presents the complete biography of the King Bee
Thursday, November 3, 5:30 p.m.
421 S. Main Street
Memphis, TN 38103
Join Martin Hawkins, author of Slim Harpo: Blues King Bee of Baton Rouge for a
book signing and talk on Thursday, November 3, at 5:30 p.m. at the Blues Hall
of Fame Museum in Memphis, TN. Blues fans will relish the only complete
biography of this internationally renowned blues singer, musician, and 1985
inductee into The Blues Hall of Fame. As Hawkins traces Harpo’s rural
upbringing near Louisiana’s capital, his professional development fostered by
the local music scene, and his national success, music aficionados will gain a
deeper appreciation for Harpo’s R&B hits like Rainin’ in My Heart, Baby Scratch
My Back, and I’m A King Bee, among others.
With new research and interviews, Hawkins fills in previous biographical gaps
and redresses misinformation about Harpo’s life. In addition to weaving the
musician’s career into the lives of other Louisiana blues players—including
Lightnin’ Slim, Lazy Lester, and Silas Hogan—the author discusses the
pioneering role of record producer J. D. Miller and illustrates how Excello
Records in Nashville brought national attention to Harpo’s music.
This engaging narrative examines Harpo’s various recording sessions and
provides a detailed discography, as well as a list of blues-related records by
fellow Baton Rouge artists. Slim Harpo: Blues King Bee of Baton Rouge will
stand as the ultimate resource on the musician’s life and the rich history of
blues heritage.
Martin Hawkins, author of A Shot in the Dark: Making Records in Nashville,
1945–1955 and, with Colin Escott, Good Rockin’ Tonight: Sun Records and the
Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll, has written over four hundred magazine articles, LP
sleeve notes, and CD booklets on roots music since 1971. Copies of his book
will be on sale at this event.

| There is a new place in Paris for locals and visitors to listen to blues
music at least 3 time a week! Located In the middle of the City, near the
famous Quartier Latin, and just a 10 minute walk from Notre Dame, lies The
Tennessee-Paris where you can find old and roots blues along with all other
kinds of blues music. This club oozes the atmosphere of the American Deep South
and feels like a Delta juke joint. The Tennessee-Paris has hosted French and
Australian artists, but also recently welcomed Dr. David Evans, a 1981 Keeping
The Blues Alive Award recipient whose book Big Road Blues was inducted into The
Blues Hall of Fame in 1991. |

What's new for ISC 2016?
This year ISC has added a new category called Unpublished. We all know how
important publishing is to an artist - it is one of the major sources of
revenue, but it is so difficult to get your music heard by publishing
companies. So, ISC is taking steps to open the doors for you by having
established, high-profile publishers as judges for this category only. This is
your chance to get your music heard by publishers who can help your songwriting
career. Songs entered into Unpublished cannot be owned in any part by a music
publishing company (entrant must own 100% of the publishing rights to the
song). Songs entered into the Unpublished category must also be entered into at
least one other category (excluding the Unsigned Only category). |
