In Samurai Shodown 3 and 4, there are two 'modes' available to every
character in the game: Bust and Slash.

Your character design remains intact, but the movelist changes depending on
which mode you select. This in turn affects the playstyle of the character,
allowing for completely different strategies. You could have a situation
where a character is a zoner, but changes to rushdown if you select a
different mode. In some cases, a character uses a pet in battle and the pet
changes (or disappears completely) depending on which mode you choose.
Those are just a few examples but it basically comes down to the
character's tools and playstyle changing based on the mode that is selected
before the match starts.
