May Doug rest in peace. I am no longer in Castlewood but always enjoyed
Doug's Birds and wildlife posts. He was such a great asset to our

Hi Neighbors,
Doug Tabony on Vassal passed away on Wednesday. He was active in the
neighborhood as the newsletter editor for 15 years. He was also active in
the neighborhood email list, never shying away from expressing his opinions
or sharing pictures of neighborhood wildlife. He was an integral part of
our neighborhood and will be missed. I'd like to have a moment of silence
on Saturday and give neighbors an opportunity to share some words. There
will also be a small memorial service on Sunday if you'd like to attend.
Laura Tabony wrote a few words that I'll share.
Doug died yesterday, 6/30/21. We moved to Castlewood Forest in 1997 because
of the beautiful trees. Doug is quite a nature lover. In 2000, he had a
bicycle accident and suffered from incomplete quadriplegia. Soon after that
he began an approximately 15 year tenure as COVNA newsletter editor;
started a neighborhood web page and a neighborhood email. He created
neighbor guides for birds and for butterflies he had seen. Doug was a
violinist and played with Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Lyric
Opera, as well as many regional orchestras and quartet and soloist
freelance work. He collected classical music performances from the 30's and
40's and older jazz, many of which he published on his YouTube channel,
2ndviolinist, which also includes his master's violin recital and
performances of friends including and 2 of the bands he played in, the Lost
Austin Band and Jazz Me Blues.
Doug will have a memorial page on the Austin Natural Funerals site and will
be laid to rest at Eloise Gardens, a natural, green burial site. His
memorial stone will have the following inscription. We anticipate having a
memorial open house in our home on January 15th which would have been our
50th wedding anniversary and will let the neighborhood know.
Evening Slips into Night
Evening slips into night
Light fades
Twittering of Chimney Swifts and buzz of cicadas
give way to the pulsing of 1000 crickets
The Mockingbird continues its endless song
Sudden flashes of light announce the arrival of lightning bugs
Across the way an eerie call
Small animals need watch for the screech owl awakening
