Dear Neighbors,
I want to share the latest information we've received about cold weather
shelters and warming centers.
Again, if you feel like you are not safe and need emergency assistance,
please call 9-1-1.
Before heading to one of the locations, please call 512-305-ICEE (4233) for
the latest info.
I also understand that City staff is working on establishing additional
shelters, and we will share any new info as soon as it is available.
Please let us know if your family needs to get to shelter and needs
assistance. We will do what we can to help with any emergency rides. You can

Austin Energy continues to have customers power turned off, as dictated by
the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). The demand for power
continues to outpace the available supply.
The Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center remains activated and is
supporting a variety of needs that are present in the community.
Shelters remain open 24/7 and will continue to operate for as long as there
is a need. Palmer Events Center remains our primary warming center. Thanks to
AISD, we are able to open two additional facilities but have extremely
limited capacity. These sites are intended for our most vulnerable
populations, especially those who have medical devices that need power to
operate.
Centers with limited available capacity are located at:
Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704
Mendez Middle School, 5106 Village Square Dr, Austin, TX 78744
Northeast Early College High School, 7104 Berkman Dr, Austin, TX 78752
The City has additional shelters operating, but they are currently at
capacity.
We have asked businesses (especially downtown) to turn off all non-essential
power. Below is a message we would appreciate your help sharing with our
business community.
We will provide additional updates as they are available. Below is messaging
that we will be utilizing in our communications efforts today. Please feel
free to utilize it.
Today’s critical messages
Warming Facilities
The City of Austin and Travis County have established the following centers
for members of the public. If you can safely shelter at your home, please do.
We must preserve these limited spaces for those who are vulnerable and have
medical equipment that require power to operate. If you plan to travel to
these sites, please be prepared to arrive at your destination safely – dress
in layers for warm, bring extra blankets, phone chargers, water, and snacks.
Facilities with limited available capacity are located at:
Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704
Mendez Middle School, 5106 Village Square Dr, Austin, TX 78744
Northeast Early College High School, 7104 Berkman Dr, Austin, TX 78752
Power Use
We need everyone with power to reduce their usage immediately.
If you have power, conserve energy to help stabilize the power grid for the
rest of our community
Turn off lights
Turn down thermostats to 68-degrees
Close shades & blinds to reduce heat lost through windows Turn off and unplug
non-essential lights and appliances
Avoid using large appliances (i.e., ovens, washing machines, etc.).
If your power is out
We know this is extremely difficult. Please do everything you can to stay
warm.
Close blinds or curtains to keep in heat
Close off as many rooms as you can
Wear multiple layers of loose-fighting, warm clothing
Place towels or rags in cracks under doors
Message for businesses
We need your help.
Areas with power likely share a circuit with a critical load circuit that are
not subject to outages. Critical load circuits include hospitals, control
centers, 911, the airport and water/wastewater plants. We are in the midst of
a Texas electric grid emergency where conservation of energy is critical.
What you can do:
Closed businesses should eliminate their power use as much as possible.
Take any measure that's safe to reduce the amount of power used at your
building or business.
Everyone should lower thermostats and turn off all non-essentials.
