Water Odor Update
Austin Water continues to respond to the unusual taste and odor some members
of our community have experienced. Water provided by Austin Water continues
to meet all regulatory standards and is safe to drink.
Austin Water crews have been performing targeted flushing and is now
tailoring flushing requests to customer calls and pockets of the water
system with low water circulation. For customers who are still experiencing
unusual taste and odor, please call 3-1-1 and provide your address. This
will help Austin Water track and address the issue. A map of the areas being
flushed is available on Austin Water’s website and at this link.
Austin Water believes that the odor issues were likely caused by the
presence of Zebra Mussels in a raw water pipeline at Ullrich Water Treatment
Plant. The pipeline was put back in service on Feb. 6 after being out of
service for repairs over the past two weeks.
A list of Frequently Asked Questions is available on the website, and Austin
Water will continue to post updates online as well as via their social media
feeds on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Customers are still encouraged to
contact 3-1-1 with any questions or concerns.
The City Manager and Austin Water Director have informed us that they are
working on several projects to manage the growing risks associated with
Zebra mussels, including:
Marine inspection and cleaning contracts to remove Zebra mussels from our
Lake Austin and Lake Travis intake structures. This work was initially
expected to be done annually, but given the Zebra mussel proliferation rate
Austin Water is increasing the frequency of this cleaning.
This year, Austin Water is in the process of procuring sodium permanganate,
a chemical that can be added to the raw water system to slow the growth of
Zebra mussels. In addition, this chemical has taste and odor control
properties.
We have a capital improvement project underway to implement a copper ion
based system to control the growth of Zebra mussels in our raw water system.
Copper ion is a cost effective, easy to operate and maintain solution to
address Zebra mussels.
I want to thank city staff for their diligence in addressing this issue from
the start, and I want to thank you all for your patience as the city
continues to see improvements.
Staff will continue to provide updates as new and significant information
becomes available. You can get the latest updates at austinwater.org.
