Wanted to let you know about the most recent developments in the bond
package discussions that are going on currently. There is one more Board
Working Session on Wednesday, June 14 at 6pm and the final up/down vote on
the package (which will be sent to the ballot box in November) is Monday,
June 19.
In an effort to get the bond package under $1B, the Cowan repairs and
renovations have been removed along with other projects all over the city.
The Cowan project was going to address repairs to systems (roof, HVAC,
electrical, plumbing, etc.) that are now beginning to fail mostly due to
age as the school approaches a 20 year age. It has a current rating of 36
(out of 100) which is not great, but the highest score among the long list
of critical campus projects. It also includes a renovation/expansion which
will be instrumental in dealing with overcrowding issues not just at Cowan,
but across the entire southern and southwestern portion of the district. If
Cowan is not included in the current bond package there will be no budget
for these improvements and repairs.
Sending this out because I know that we have lots of parents at Cowan
Elementary that would appreciate an opportunity to give feedback to the
board in advance of their working session and board meeting. Yasmin Wagner
has been keeping us updated of the situation as it evolves, but she needs
the support of additional board members in order to get Cowan back on the
list. Please reach out to the entire board at trustees@xxxxxxxxxxxxx to
request their support for Cowan.
