And thank you to Nelly. I have lived here for about 8 years and have come
to look forward to and rely on straightforward and pertinent information
from Nelly in her volunteer role on the board. I’m not sure how long you
served as our Austin Neighborhoods Council delegate, but your dedication to
COVNA is very evident and very much appreciated.
Thank you to all current and past members of the board who volunteer their
time to serve our neighborhood.
I love this neighborhood and feel so fortunate that my kids get to grow up
in this hamlet in south Austin.

Thanks to everyone who has been contributing over the years to COVNA as a
board member, newsletter carrier, or helpful neighbor in any number of ways.
I was newsletter editor for a few years back in the 80s-90s, and served a
term as president. Things were quite different back then, as we dealt with
a number of big issues, one of which led to the organization of the
association. When the city annexed the neighborhood back in 1984, it had to
promise to bring in sewers, which did not happen for four years. The
neighborhood association was in part organized to help COVNA negotiate with
the city. Later, the association helped negotiate with the developers of
surrounding tracts to keep densities and natural features as compatible as
possible with the neighborhood. So, for instance, the dollar store at the
corner of Monarch and Menchaca has the brick sides and orientation due to
neighborhood concerns. The trees along the north side of Davis Lane were
kept in part because of our request that the natural look of the area be
preserved as much as possible. I know that many in the neighborhood enjoy
walking the trail over there. COVNA also organized and raised funds to
fight the big outbreak of oak wilt that hit us hard beginning about 1989,
and the association helped a number of residents pay for treatment, which
included trenching and chemicals. As for meetings, until about 2000, we
held monthly meetings (very lightly attended most of the time), and then we
switched to a more infrequent basis. For many years we met at the Church of
Christ on Menchaca, where we also held the annual holiday party in
December. The other regular annual event for many years was the June
picnic, which I hosted a couple of times and that a number of other
neighbors have hosted over the years. Recently, the spring fling, garage
sale, and Halloween parties have been wonderful additions, and having the
last couple of holiday parties (before the pandemic) at Casa Garcia's have
been a great success.
My kids grew up in this neighborhood, and now my grandson is growing up
here, as we provided daycare for him four days a week. Some of you may have
seen him driving around in his red Corvette or running up and down the
street. His brother is on the way (due in September), and we'll be taking
care of him soon, too. We're very happy to see so many young families in
the neighborhood, and hope it stays that way.
My point is that my wife Maggie and I have really enjoyed our 34 years
here and look forward to many more. *If you love the neighborhood as not
just a place to live but as a place to raise your family and make good
friends, consider helping out by serving a couple years on the board or as
newsletter editor. *I'm sure that the "walkers" (including
myself--Heatherwood, and Queenswood to Crownspoint), are eager to get back
to delivering the neighborhood news.

Currently there are two open positions on the board: Newsletter Editor
and our Austin Neighborhood Council representative. I appreciate the hard
work and effort that Rick and Nelly have given to this neighborhood so I’m
calling on my passionate volunteers to step up!
Our neighborhood facebook page was very helpful during and after the
snowstorm but it is not an official COVNA page. The Facebook page must
be kept separate from the Neighborhood Association due to its nonprofit
status. I will be taking myself off the page today so as not to create
any confusion.
My tenure ends in December. If you are interested in running for
president, please do so and if you have any questions or concerns, please
feel free to reach out.
